Scientific projects
Quick detection of the harmful agent is the key factor in early warning of the population after a release of harmful substances in the air. A functional model of a mobile LIDAR for detection and tracking of airborne biological and chemical agents will be developed in the frame of the project as an early warning system after a CB attack or an accident. The LIDAR will be composed of elastic and fluorescent subsystems, working in the IR and UV parts of the light spectrum.
The key factor in forewarning and timely protection of people at the release of harmful substances into the atmosphere is quick detection of agents and timely response action. As an instrument for early detection and warning of a potential attack by hostile forces or terrorists with biological or chemical weapons or of an ecological disaster, a functional model mobile lidar for the detection and surveillance of spatial expansion of biological and chemical agents in the atmosphere, will be developed as part of a project.
Emissions of biological and chemical agents in the atmosphere represent the most effective way of spreading war toxins. The wind successfully spreads the aerosols in size ranging between 1 and 10 micrometres (typically biological aerosols) in the atmosphere, as well as numerous illnesses that are spread by biological agents, even more intensively when entering airways. Therefore, early detection of potential dangers of biological and chemical agents present in the atmosphere is of crucial importance. With the combination of elastic and fluorescent lidar, working in infrared and ultraviolet area of light, we can sense and observe the spreading of aerosols in the ground level atmosphere in a radius of 10kms and more; at the distance of 1 to 5km, we can differentiate between aerosols as biological agents or non-biological, or among different chemical agents. In this manner, lidar can present »an instrument of early warning« which triggers further additional measures – warning of danger, protection and exact recognition of biological aerosols in the atmosphere with additional instruments. The use of the latter confirms/rejects the presence of biological and chemical war toxins in the ground level atmosphere where they can have an effect on people. The advantage of lidar in early warning protection is that it is a remote sensing device and there is no need for direct contact with potential biological and chemical agents. Therefore, we can detect dangers from a distant location and acquire some time for protection and other measures.
